Grease additive selection

Choose the Solid Lubricant System That Fits Your Formulation

The Torvix™ range gives grease manufacturers four routes to improve load-carrying capacity, wear protection and boundary friction. Select a WS₂ system when low friction, oxidation resistance or a lighter finished-grease appearance matters; select MoS₂ when an OEM specification or traditional heavy-duty grease profile requires molybdenum disulfide; or use a hybrid package to balance performance and formulation cost.

Product Solid lubricant system Best fit Compatible grease systems Treat-rate guidance
W700 Sub-micron WS₂ + hBN Premium multipurpose and OEM-branded greases; lighter gray-silver appearance; added thermal-management benefit Lithium, calcium sulfonate, polyurea Application-specific; request TDS
W720 Surface-modified sub-micron WS₂ package Heavy-duty EP grease; lower-friction alternative to conventional MoS₂ systems Lithium, calcium sulfonate, polyurea; soap and non-soap systems 2.5% is the published ASTM D2596 test loading; validate in the finished grease

M770 Ultra-refined MoS₂; up to 60% lubricating solids MoS₂ OEM specifications, shock loading, vibration, start-up and low-speed lubrication Lithium, lithium complex, calcium sulfonate, aluminum complex Application-specific; request TDS
Do not select a treat rate from chemistry alone. Base-oil viscosity, thickener chemistry, NLGI grade, existing EP package and target test result all affect the correct dosage. Powderful Solutions can recommend a starting point after reviewing the base grease and performance target.
MoS₂ grease guide

What Is MoS₂ Grease?

MoS₂ grease is a lubricating grease formulated with molybdenum disulfide as a solid lubricant. Under boundary and mixed-lubrication conditions, MoS₂ supports film strength and helps reduce metal-to-metal contact when the base grease film is insufficient.

It is commonly selected for heavily loaded, slow-moving or shock-loaded components. The correct MoS₂ concentration depends on the application, the grease matrix and the performance specification rather than a single universal percentage.

MoS₂, WS₂ or a Hybrid Grease Additive?

Choose MoS₂

When a customer or OEM specification requires MoS₂, when a conventional black heavy-duty grease is acceptable, or when proven boundary lubrication under shock load is the primary requirement.

Choose WS₂

When lower friction, higher oxidative-temperature capability, reduced treat-rate potential or a less-dark finished grease is strategically important.

Choose a Hybrid

When the formulation needs the established EP contribution of MoS₂, the low-friction behavior of WS₂ and the thermal-management contribution of hBN in one concentrate.

Performance validation

Evaluate Grease Additives With the Tests That Match the Application

ASTM D2596 — 4-Ball EP

Measures weld point and load-wear behavior under extreme-pressure conditions. Published W720 data reports an 800 kgf weld point at a 2.5% test loading.

ASTM D2266 — 4-Ball Wear

Measures wear-scar diameter under anti-wear conditions and helps confirm whether the additive package protects the contact without creating abrasive behavior.

Friction Testing

SRV or pin-on-disc testing can quantify friction behavior under the contact pressure, speed, temperature and stroke that more closely represent the target application.

Finished-Grease Validation

Confirm worked penetration, mechanical stability, oil separation, corrosion response and compatibility alongside tribology results before finalizing the formulation.

Published reference point: Torvix™ W720 reaches an 800 kgf ASTM D2596 weld point at 2.5% loading in Powderful Solutions' published technical content. Results must still be validated in the customer's finished grease matrix.

Frequently asked questions

MoS₂ and WS₂ Grease Additive FAQs

What is MoS₂ grease used for?
MoS₂ grease is commonly used in heavily loaded, slow-moving, shock-loaded or vibration-intensive equipment where boundary lubrication is likely. Typical examples include pins, bushings, bearings, joints and off-road machinery.
What is a WS₂ grease additive?
A WS₂ grease additive uses tungsten disulfide as a lamellar solid lubricant. It is selected to improve extreme-pressure, anti-wear and friction behavior, particularly when lower friction, better oxidation resistance or a less-dark finished grease is desired.
What is the best MoS₂ grease equivalent?
There is no universal equivalent. Torvix W720 is the primary WS₂-based option for formulators seeking to reduce or replace conventional MoS₂, while X730 combines WS₂, MoS₂ and hBN when a hybrid performance and cost balance is preferred. The final selection should be confirmed against the grease matrix and required test results.
What treat rate should I use?
Treat rate depends on thickener chemistry, base oil, NLGI grade, existing additive package and target result. W720 has a published ASTM D2596 reference result at 2.5% loading. For W700, X730 and M770, request the product TDS and a formulation recommendation rather than applying a generic dosage.
Which grease types are compatible?
Across the Torvix range, published compatibility includes lithium, lithium complex, calcium sulfonate, aluminum complex and polyurea systems. Compatibility varies by product, so use the comparison table and confirm the final formulation with the technical team.
Can I request a sample and technical data sheet?
Yes. Send the grease type, target application, current additive system and required test result when requesting a sample. Powderful Solutions can provide the relevant TDS and recommend which Torvix product to evaluate first.
