PFAS-free lubricant FAQ

Before you reformulate from PTFE.

Is PTFE considered a PFAS substance?

PTFE is a fluoropolymer and is commonly discussed within broad PFAS regulatory and disclosure frameworks. Requirements vary by jurisdiction and application, so PTFE-containing lubricants should be reviewed against the customer's current compliance obligations.

What is the best PFAS-free replacement for PTFE in grease?

There is no universal one-for-one replacement. WS₂ is typically evaluated when low friction and high EP performance dominate; MoS₂ for cost-effective industrial EP; and hBN when white color, electrical insulation, chemical inertness or high-temperature behavior is important.

Do WS₂, MoS₂ and hBN contain fluorine?

WS₂, MoS₂ and hBN are inorganic compounds with no fluorine content by chemistry. Documentation should still be reviewed against the exact supplier, formulation, end use and target jurisdiction.

Will reformulating from PTFE change lubricant performance?

Yes. Final behavior depends on treat rate, particle size, dispersion stability, base oil, thickener system and additive-package compatibility. That is why Powderful's proposed route compares candidate systems against the existing baseline rather than treating PTFE replacement as a simple ingredient swap.

What starting treat rates should be evaluated?

Powderful's current guidance lists PTFE commonly at 1–5 wt%, WS₂ at 0.5–2 wt%, MoS₂ at 1–3 wt% and hBN at 3–8 wt%, depending on the formulation target. These are screening windows only; final dosing requires validation in the specific grease, oil or coating system.

How do I get PFAS-free documentation?

Powderful states that SDS, TDS, CAS-based documentation and customer-specific compliance statements can be provided for supplier questionnaires, regulatory submissions and product declarations.
